People often ask what actually happens between the first "we'd like to redo this room" and the day they walk into a finished space. From the outside a project can look like a single leap from empty room to photograph. From the inside it is five distinct steps, each with its own rhythm and its own conversations. Here is what a project looks like from where we sit - and, just as importantly, what it feels like for the family living through it.
To keep it real, picture a typical brief: a family with a growing child, a room that no longer works, and a wish for something calm, playful and built to last.
1. Discovery
Everything starts with a visit and a proper conversation - not a catalogue. We measure the space, but more than that we ask how it is really used: who wakes first, where the mess collects, how the light moves through the day, what the child loves this month. We talk budget and timeline openly, because a design that ignores either is just a nice drawing.
For the client, this stage feels less like a sales meeting and more like being properly listened to. Most people leave discovery a little surprised by how much of the conversation was about their routines rather than paint colours.
2. Concept
Next we go quiet and think. Out of that comes a concept: a mood board, a colour story, a rough zoning plan and a clear point of view about what the room wants to be. This is deliberately loose - it is the argument for a direction, not the finished detail.
The client experiences this as the first "oh, I can see it" moment. We present the direction honestly, including the trade-offs, and we expect pushback. The best rooms come from this being a conversation - we would rather redraw a concept now than rebuild a wall later.
3. Design
Once the direction is agreed, design is where it becomes real and specific. Layouts are locked, furniture is drawn to the millimetre, materials and finishes are chosen, lighting is planned, storage is worked out down to the shelf. Where it helps, we produce 3D views so a family can walk the room before a single thing is built.
For the client this is the most detailed stretch - lots of decisions, but small ones, each with the big picture already settled. The aim is that by the end, there are no surprises left. What is on paper is what will be built.
We manage the hundred tiny decisions so a family keeps their evenings. That is most of what turnkey really means.
4. Build
Then the drawings leave the studio and become sawdust and site visits. Custom furniture goes into production, vendors are coordinated, and site work is managed against the plan. This is the longest phase and the one clients see least of - by design. Things that behave differently in the flesh than on paper get resolved here, quietly.
A client's experience of build should be calm. They hear from us with progress, not with problems to solve. A few key moments are shared:
- The first custom pieces arriving on site.
- A colour or finish confirmed against the real light of the room.
- A mid-build walkthrough, so nothing is a surprise at the end.
5. Style & handover
The last step is the one that turns a built room into a finished one. We style it - placement, soft furnishings, the last books on the shelf - photograph it, and walk the family through every detail, snag list in hand. Then we get out of the way.
For the client, handover is the payoff: the room they first described in a discovery meeting, now real, and often a little better than they had pictured. And because the bones were planned to grow, it is a room that will keep working long after we have left. That, from brief to handover, is the whole job - done properly.
